Touring 2009

2009 is turning out to be a big touring year for me: The year started with a few Boz Scaggs dates on the east coast, with a great band and great tunes, as usual. I also got a chance to play my first shows with the amazing, multi-talented Bobby Caldwell in Boston in February. Since then I've been on the road with a small but mighty band in the U.S. and in Europe in support of Madeleine Peyroux's new album, Bare Bones, and the tour will continue through South Korea and Japan before bringing me back home. There won't be time for a break, however, because Steely Dan's Rent Party '09 tour begins on June 9th. (Concert dates are posted on steelydan.com and at myspace.com/jonherington) Then, from June 5th through July 12th, Steely Dan will take the show to Europe on the Left Bank Holiday tour.

New Record Update

I did get enough time at home in New York early this year to finish the recording of my next album, and now the trick will be to find enough time off the road time to mix and master it. The plan is to get that done during a break this summer. Thanks for your patience and interest.

Old news...

News - June 2008

Hello again. I'm about to leave town for the start of the "Think Fast" Steely Dan tour. It's a tour of the States and Canada, and won't bring me back home until the beginning of September. Check steelydan.com for the tour schedule.

I'm happy to report that Walter Becker's new cd, Circus Money, is now available. It was a thrill to record, and I love the way it turned out. Difficult to categorize, lyrically rich (of course), it's somehow simultaneously strange and familiar sounding, with a recording clarity that reveals all the beautiful details of the performances.

I had enough of a break from all the touring early this year to allow me to get a lot of overdubbing done on the next album. Eight or nine of the tunes are now pretty much ready to mix. I hope to finish the rest of the overdubs in the fall after the SD tour is over with, and soon after that dive into the mixing phase of the project.

Thanks for checking in.

June 2007

Greetings, everyone.

I'm in the middle of the Steely Dan "Heavy Rollers" world tour, and we are definitely doing some heavy rolling this year. We're just about done with the U.S. portion of the tour, which included the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival date (a first for me), and we head to Europe in July and to Japan, Australia, and New Zealand in August and September. It's a great band and crew, a great bunch of people to hang with, and it's hard to beat set lists like the ones we've been playing, with a mix of great tunes, old and new, from the deep Dan catalog. All that and solo space, too. Needless to say, I'm enjoying the ride.

All the road work this past year or so with Steely Dan, Madeleine Peyroux, and a short trip with Boz Scaggs has left me with little time to devote to the new record, but now, after getting past some technical snags, I am set up to work on the vocal and guitar overdubs, and I'll probably tackle that next phase after this tour has stopped rolling, sometime in October. Thanks for your patience and thanks for checking in.

February 2007

There's a lot to report since my last news posting.

The biggest news, I guess, is that I was able to find three days in a row to record the basics tracks for my next cd. On June 4th, 5th, and 6th, Dennis Espantman, Frank Pagano and I got to work at Mission Sound in Williamsburg with Sham Sundra engineering, and we ended up with a total of thirteen rich sounding tracks (Oliver has a great sounding old Neve console, Artie Smith brought some big fat drums, and Sham brought his HUGE ears!). It was much more than I imagined we could get done in the time we had booked. (The rehearsals paid off!) In fact, we managed to get so much done that I even had time to add some Wurlitzer electric piano to a few of the tracks. The next step is to get to work on the overdubs, mostly vocals and guitars. I've taken a crack at a few of the tunes, but other work has gotten in the way, and I'll resume recording as soon as I have some more time at home again.

The Steely Dan tour in the summer of '06 with Michael McDonald was a lot of fun, and a great success. It was a two month long parade of hits, and particularly rewarding with Michael sitting in for the last 6 tunes or so of our set. There's more Steely Dan work coming up this year, too, so check steelydan.com for tour details.

2006 brought some brand new work for me as well. I began working with Madeleine Peyroux and her band, and we did a few U.S. dates and then a European tour in November and December.

I'm now on the road with Madeleine Peyroux and band for a month of dates across the southern states, And looking forward to the upcoming May and June dates with Steely Dan, which will include a show at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

JUNE 2006

In March I had the pleasure of joining Donald Fagen for his first solo tour ever, in support of his new release "Morph the Cat." The band included many recent Steely Dan veterans, including Keith Carlock, Michael Leonhart, Carolyn Leonhart, Walt Weiskopf, Cindy Mizelle, Wayne Krantz, and welcomed two fantastic LA-based players, Jeff Young and Freddie Washington. The show featured lots of material from each of Donald's three solo releases, with a handful of Steely Dan classics thrown in as well.

Except for the month of March, I've had lots of time in New York City so far this year, with lots of gigging and recording to do. Songwriting work is finished for the new CD, and rehearsals have been productive. Recording of the basic rhythm tracks is about to begin with Dennis Espantman on bass and Frank Pagano on drums.

Looking ahead to the summer, I'll be heading out on the road for a two-month tour of the U.S. with Steely Dan, on a co-bill with Michael McDonald. Check steelydan.com for tour dates.

I'm happy to announce that my CD "Like So" is now available on itunes. Just go to itunes and type jon herington into the search bar.

FEBRUARY 2006

Hello again, everyone!

I enjoyed a great trip to France and Germany in September and October of last year with a production of the Bob Telson work, Bagdad Cafe, with some very welcome time off in Paris.Since then I've been back home in New York freelancing and working some more on my next bunch of songs. I've also had time to turn on Pro Tools and crank up my amp in my studio to do some recording on an upcoming CD release by drummer Takanori Niida featuring saxophonist Aaron Heick, bassist James Genus, and keyboardist/composer Adam Holtzman.

Tour dates have been announced for the upcoming Donald Fagen tour of the U.S. beginning on March 1st. Look for me in the great band Donald has assembled.

I also appear on the new Donald Fagen CD, Morph the Cat, due in stores on March 7th. The first single from the CD, H Gang, is available for downloading on itunes.

Happy listening -til next time!

AUGUST 2005

I've been doing lots of traveling since the last posting. The Bette Midler tour of Australia was a real treat, since it was my first trip to that beautiful and very livable country. On a month long trip in April we played in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, got a tour of the Barossa Valley in Australia's premium wine producing region, and enjoyed all of the gorgeous coastal cities we visited. We found great wine, beer, coffee, food, and people everywhere we went, and were sorry to have the trip end.In May I got to work with the Boz Scaggs band on a double bill with Stevie Winwood at the Sonoma Jazz Plus Festival in California, and then again in May on a bill with Marcus Miller's band in Aspen, Colorado at the close of their summer festival there. Those gigs served as warmups for about a month's worth of work with Boz in July on the West Coast, mostly, doing some of the outdoor concert series that some of the wineries there do every summer, and also doing some single nights in Vegas, Reno, and a few other spots. This month, August, I'm enjoying some overdue time sitting still in New York before heading overseas to France and Germany for an 8 week run of a work called "Bagdad Cafe", a musical composed by Bob Telson which will play in various cities (including Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen, Lyon, and Brest, among others) for about a week each. I'm looking forward to getting to know each city for a while while we're working there.I'm making slow but steady progress on the material for my next CD. I've collected about 15 songs I'm considering for the project, and the next step is playing through them with the band, which is a little tough to schedule since I've been traveling so much lately. The first few rehearsals went well, and I'm excited about getting into the recording phase when time allows.

That's all for now. As always, thanks for checking in.

MARCH 2005

Greetings, everyone.

I've been very busy since the last update. The very successful first leg of the Bette Midler "Kiss My Brass" Tour came to a close in March of 2004, and I got back to New York to resume my free lance recording and performing work for a short time, playing on some tracks on a recording now out by Carolyn Hudson, and playing live with the Robert Secret Group, one of my favorite ongoing New York based projects, now in its 12th year, I think.
Then in May of 2004 I was off to Japan with Boz Scaggs and his band for a month of Blue Note club appearances, with a week in each of four cities, Fukuoka, Nagoya, Osaka, and Tokyo. I got back in time to go to the other side of the globe for a quick trip to Madrid to perform there with Bill Evans, the saxophone virtuoso, then returned to New York again and headed up to the Woodstock area to Allaire Studios to record the next Robert Secret CD, which is due out soon, and which sounds to me like his best work yet (no small achievement after his first two releases).

July and August of 2004 brought me more touring work with Boz Scaggs, this time all in the U.S., and in September, rehearsals began for the second leg of the Bette Midler Tour, which took me all over the country from the end of September through the middle of December.

The new year of 2005, so far, finds me beginning to dig into a bunch of recently written songs (some co-written with Jim Farmer, some with Dennnis Espantman, and some of my own) which I'm planning to record once it all comes together. I expect to do some more local shows with my band as well, to work out any kinks in the new stuff. I've also been staying busy with my freelance recording, live playing, and some teaching while I've been off of the road for awhile. This will all be interrupted for 5 weeks, however, since, on the 28th of March, the third leg of the Bette Midler Tour gets under way, and I'm off to Australia to play shows in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.

Thanks for checking in.

APRIL 2004

Greetings, everyone.

It's been a long time since the last news update, and I thank you for your patience and perseverance. In this case, no news has been good news for me, if not this website of mine.

I've been busy on the road, first for the Everything Must Go tour with Steely Dan, this time as the so-called musical director as well as guitarist, an honor more than a job, since with our fearless leaders Donald and Walter plus an amazing bunch of musicians like we had, there's not much directing required. A thrill like no other, the tour was the closest thing I've experienced to musical nirvana. A sad footnote to the tour, however, was the loss of Cornelius Bumpus, who died in February this year.

I was home for a day and then dropped right into rehearsals for the Bette Midler Kiss My Brass tour. Shows began in December of 2003 and ended in March 2004.
A large, versatile, and talented band was only part of the huge production, with an amazing set, great crew, video, lights, sound, music, comedy, etc., etc., etc., and full houses in the biggest arenas all over the states. All that plus the hardest working human dynamo of a performer I've ever encountered, the divine Miss M herself, made it an unforgettable experience.

A little over a month back in New York, and then I'll be on my way to Japan to play the Blue Note clubs there with Boz Scaggs for the month of May. It is shaping up to be a tour featuring a combination of hits, blues tunes, and standards that will take advantage of the wide ranging talents of a great band of musicians backing the inimitable Boz on vocals and guitar. We'll also be doing a three week run through the California wine country in July, so all you interested folks stateside stay on the lookout for dates, please.

Plans are under way for a website revision, so stay tuned.

Thanks for checking in.

Somewhere between April 2004 and September 2002:

Jon is back from beautiful Spain and a fantastically received series of concert and club performances there with Bill Evans and Big Fun. Stay tuned for any more dates with Bill that may come up.

Two new CDs featuring Jon as both guitarist and composer have been released.

One is Dennis Chambers' new esc records release, "Outbreak."

On "Outbreak” , his Stateside debut as a leader, Dennis slams home some solid grooves in the company of such heavyweights as guitarists John Scofield, Jon Herington, Nick Moroch and Dean Brown, bassists Will Lee, Gary Willis, Matthew Garrison and his old P-Funk rhythm tandem mate Rodney ‘Skeet’ Curtis, saxophonists Michael Brecker, Bobby Malach and Aaron Heick, trumpeter Randy Brecker and longtime colleague and keyboardist Jim Beard, who produced the New York session.

While the emphasis is clearly on groove throughout "Outbreak” , Dennis does give drum fanatics plenty to drool over on Jon Herington’s dramatic "Paris On Mine", the guitarist’s nod to John McLaughlin’s "New York On My Mind" (from 1978’s Electric Guitarist ), as well as on the rampaging title track in which he goes toe to toe with Michael Brecker for the album’s kinetic peak.

Also, for a totally different side of Jon's guitar playing, check out the new Sunnyside Records release, Michael Leonhart's "Slow".

Here's what Michael has to say on the liner notes:

The idea for this album finally clicked late one night on a tour bus driving along a highway somewhere in North America. Sharing the bus with six other band mates, I decided to retreat to the back lounge with my acoustic guitar for a little quiet time. A little while later Jon Herington popped his head through the door, picked up the guitar now lying on the seat next to me as I sat watching the open road go by, and began to play some old jazz ballads. Performing five nights a week with him as part of Steely Dan's 2000 U.S. tour, I had grown quite accustomed to hearing his ferocious guitar solos night after night, but I had yet to hear this softer, romantic side. It was then and there that I began putting together the final pieces for a duo album I had begun thinking about a few years back. After having recorded "Aardvark Poses" and "Glub Glub vol. 11", the former a pianoless quartet of jazz originals, the latter a film-ish collage of short pieces with large ensembles, I was eager to switch gears and record an intimate collection of some of my favorite songs.

So in the fall and winter of 2000, Jon and I began feeling our way around the songs I had chosen. Looking to add some depth and variety to the traditional duo setting, it became clear we would record some of the songs live in the studio, while other songs we would subtly embellish with additional guitars and voices. After all, putting Ellington next to Black Sabbath, Monk next to Mancini, we needed to stray a little from any formulas. The result is "Slow". Enjoy. "
- Michael Leonhart, June 2002

Sept '02

Jon was recently seen and heard on NBC Television in the "Concert for America," a September 11th commemorative concert aired on September 11th, 2002. Part of a band including Shawn Pelton on drums, Michael Bearden on keys, Bashiri Johnson on percussion, and Tom Barney on bass, along with Rob Mathes directing and playing keys and guitar, Jon played behind a parade of artists including Reba Macintire, Gloria Estefan, and the inimitable Reverend Al Green. The concert was taped at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. with President Bush, the First Lady, and Ted and Caroline Kennedy in attendance, along with a crowd of political and entertainment world personalities.

Jon and his band are booked for a hometown gig in New York City on November 18th at The C-Note. Check back for details, or email your request to be put on the mailing list to be notified about gigs at: jonherington@earthlink.net

Jon will be travelling again in late October with Boz Scaggs and band, this time for shows in Indiana, Mississippi, Loisiana, and Dallas. More dates may be added; check www.pollstar.com and type in Boz Scaggs for all concert info.

Jon will be heading to Japan on September 19th for, of all things, a country music festival! Joined by Zev Katz on bass, Brian Mitchell on keys, and Denny McDermott on drums, Jon will be backing up the one and only Rosanne Cash. The band will be featured with Charlie Daniels and his band, and the festival will include performances by many Japanese country music bands, as well!

Stay on the lookout for two new CDs featuring Jon, Michael Leonhart's "Slow, " on Sunnyside Records, and Dennis Chambers' new release on ESC Records. Both should be in stores soon.

Honorable mention...

Darren DeVivo, disc jockey for WFUV in the New York City area, has given Jon's new disc, "Like So," an honorable mention in his "Top 10" list for the year 2000.

Under his "Number Two" listing he writes.... " Steely Dan / Two Against Nature: It was worth the 20-year wait. Picking up where they left off in 1980 with Gaucho, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker craftanother collection of perfectly executed songs with all the Steely Dan trademarks. Honorable mention: Steely Dan guitarist Jon Herington cut a fine solo album called Like So. It shows his NYC pop rock smarts, at times like Marshall Crenshaw." (from WFUV's website)
